  • More Able Evening 2023

    Published 23/10/23

The More Able Evening was the perfect opportunity for the parents of students aiming for Grade 7-9 or As and A*s to improve their awareness of the steps they must take to ensure their children reach their maximum academic potential.

From Year 7 to Year 12, this evening has always been effective in providing an insight into the resources and opportunities that are available to us, so we can really push ourselves into achieving the top grades. I particularly enjoyed the keynote speech from a former student, Jasleen Kapoor. She provided us with a story of the journey into her career - this was enlightening and showed us that even if our performance in school is not perfect, there is always another route we can take to reach our final goal. Mr Ghataura gave a talk on how parents can support the younger students in staying focused on their academics, but also setting achievable and realistic goals. For Key Stage 4 and 5, we had the opportunity to talk to ex-Heston students and received valuable advice on how to revise efficiently and how to balance social and academic life.

Overall, the evening was educational and provided a clear understanding of how parents and their children can work in tandem with each other to achieve the best that they can.

  • New High Magnification Microscopes

    Published 23/10/23

Using the new microscopes was truly an enriching experience, allowing us to view several samples ranging from plant roots, bird feathers and sand granules. We could see up to x1000 magnification.

It was so fascinating viewing these under the microscope, so we can get a sense of their physical structure. We also carried out a Biology A-Level Required Practical, which resulted in great success, as we saw cells undergoing  prophase and metaphase which helped build my understanding of mitosis. The hands-on experience really allowed us to improve our scientific knowledge, preparing us for university should we choose to take sciences. I look forward to using these amazing microscopes in the future!

  • New PE Changing Rooms

    Published 23/10/23

It was such a lovely surprise to see the new changing rooms for our PE lessons.

I like the new colours and the modern feel. They are much brighter, cleaner, open and more spacious than before. They are much nicer than our old changing rooms.

  • National Poetry Day – 05 October 2023

    Published 23/10/23

National Poetry Day took place on 05 October and helped us explore relevant topics related to 'refuge' and the diverse beliefs related to this. An amazing example of a beautiful poem that explores these themes is Roger Robinson's 'A Portable Paradise'.

This literature-based event was open to all year groups from Year 7 all the way to Year 13 and even extended to the teachers, which created an inspiring learning environment for us. We participated in creating beautiful short pieces of poetry about what refuge means to us, not only what home is but also how it feels to be safe. Ms Currie read out her favourite poem and Mrs Kyriacou displayed many poems in the LRC.

Honestly, this was a wonderful experience for students and staff to analyse and to raise awareness of countries that are not as fortunate as us to be safe with no looming threats of war or civil conflicts and to explore the wider theme of refuge through diverse poetry.

A Portable Paradise by Roger Robinson

And if I speak of Paradise,
then I’m speaking of my grandmother
who told me to carry it always
    on my person, concealed, so
no one else would know but me.
That way they can’t steal it, she’d say.
And if life puts you under pressure,
trace its ridges in your pocket,
smell its piney scent on your handkerchief,
hum its anthem under your breath.
And if your stresses are sustained and daily,
get yourself to an empty room – be it hotel,
hostel or hovel – find a lamp
and empty your paradise onto a desk:
your white sands, green hills and fresh fish.
Shine the lamp on it like the fresh hope
of morning, and keep staring at it till you sleep.

Year 7 Boys Football v Rivers: Won 4-2

Year 8 Boys Football v Bolder: Lost 6-0

Match Report: Year 7 Boys Football v Rivers Academy.

    Written By Raphael Conner 7B

The second game of the season for the year 7 team saw a visit from Rivers Academy. The match kicked off and 3 minutes in came the first chance for Heston. Roshan laid the ball off to Enva, who passed to Zak on the wing, who calmly placed his shot into the bottom right corner of the goal. 1-0 Heston. Roshan was doing an excellent job controlling the midfield and directing play. Roashan crossed the ball to Raphael who volleyed the ball to score the second goal of the match. Rivers then started to test the Heston defence but defenders and Alex and Cezar stopped a number of shots. It was an unfortunate goal keeping mistake which was pounced on by Rivers for their first goal. Half-time came, Heston remained up 2-1.

The second half started and changes were made by both teams. Both teams tested each other’s goalkeepers with a number of shots early in the second half. Shots continued back and forth from both teams and Rivers was first to score in the second half, bringing the score level 2-2. Rivers continued to dominate play early into the half. Heston made a couple of substitutions which helped to turn the game. Roshan linked up again with Enva, who held the ball up for Raphael who smashed the ball onto the crossbar but then down into the goal. 3-2 Heston! Rivers attacked again looking for an equaliser. Cezar intercepted the ball passing down the line to Zak, who crossed the ball to Enva. Enva who controlled the ball well under pressure, turned and struck the ball into the bottom corner to help secure the win 4-2.

Girls Football and Netball Club Updates

    Written by Paige Williams 11O

Netball with Miss Hunter has been fun and interactive. We do fun skill-based activities that prepare us for our games with demonstrations helping our understanding and knowledge. There has been a fantastic turnout of girls from Year 7 all the way to year 11 involved in playing with the club this year - which is lovely to see. The commitment has been positive with lots of new faces.

Girls' football has had a good start to the year with lots of new girls attending the club. The groups are split; Year 7 is coached by Miss Reynolds and the junior and senior teams coached by Miss Seremba. This gives us time to practice with our teammates before our upcoming fixtures after half-term. I have enjoyed both of these clubs and am excited about the year ahead for girls' clubs.

I also got Bronze for the Beam and Vault for individual pieces. My overall score got me a place on the official London Team as a reserve. Being an elite gymnast is my passion and I am very proud of my achievements and aim to make it to the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics.

With hard work and determination, we can all achieve our goals.

  • Charity Walk for SSAFA

    Published 17/10/23

few friends from Scouts and completed a charity walk from Osterley Library for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity. We set off from Osterley at 07:30am and walked through Chiswick, Hammersmith, and Kensington; we passed many landmarks to reach SSAFA HQ in Central London. After our 14 and a half mile walk, we were able to have our photos taken with two Beefeaters from the Tower of London.

We asked family and friends to sponsor us so that we could give SSAFA a donation that would go to a good cause. We raised £554 in total, which will go towards service men and women and their families, as well as veterans.

After doing this charity walk, I felt a great amount of pride as I knew what I had done would go towards helping people who look after our countries and support people world-wide.

  • Super Learning Day

    Published 16/10/23

Friday, 06 October saw Heston Community School students participate in their first Super Learning Day of the academic year. Normal lessons were replaced by enriching and engaging activities, including an Olympic Games Art Competition, PSHE workshops on current issues and practising interview skills.

    Years 7-10

Years 7 to 10 teamed up in groups to compete in representing a chosen country and Olympic sport. They used their impressive creativity and art skills to create 3D models of stadiums and they also designed and wrote their very own newspapers. All the groups produced amazing work and picking a winner was very tough.

    But, huge congratulations to…

Group 26 [Mrs Ben Hmida] – Representing Poland and the 4x100m Relay

The competition was very close, so all groups should be incredibly proud of what they produced, particularly our runner-ups:

    • Group 12 (Miss Gould) – Representing Egypt and Rowing
    • Group 18 (Mr Dye) – Representing Japan and Rowing

Here’s what a few of Hestonians had to say:

“Super Learning Day was really enjoyable. Being one of the older students in the group, I felt a sense of responsibility towards my group and I tried hard to show leadership. The group was divided into two. One group worked on the 3D model and the other group worked on the newspaper. By the end of the day, the class felt united as a team. It was nice to see people who at the start didn’t speak to each other, engaging in full conversations. I feel that everyone learnt something new and showed our Hestonian values of Respect, Equality, Resilience, Ambition, Honesty, and Kindness.”Himmat, 10B

“During Super Learning Day, my group and I made a Relay stadium for our 3D model. We communicated with each other in our team and helped each other build our model. We added details like timers and made sure everything was stable. I really enjoyed this experience and hope that I can do it again.” – Anusha, 8R

“Personally, I thought Super Learning Day was very fun and enjoyable. I liked the fact that we had a huge variety of materials to use for our 3D models.”Laksh, 9Y

“Super Learning Day was an amazing experience as I got to learn about a different sport that I didn’t know about before. I also learnt fun facts about the Olympics that will be held next year.”Kiran, 10B

“I enjoyed Super Learning Day very much, we did many fun activities such as creating a stadium and a newspaper about Mongolia and Judo. We learnt a lot of information and fun facts about Mongolia, Judo and the Olympics.”Olivier, 7W

“I found Super Learning Day really fun. It was a great opportunity to make new friends. My group got assigned Korea and we all put our creative ideas together to make an amazing Taekwondo Stage. I enjoyed it a lot and I hope we continue to have many Super Learning Days in the future.” – Dilpreet, 8Y

“We were assigned two tasks to complete [a stadium and a newspaper to advertise your sport]. I was in a mixed group of Year 7s, 8s, 9s and 10s and I had a very enjoyable experience. We had excellent communication skills and teamwork.”Sonia, 7W

    Years 11-13

Year 12 started the day off with a workshop that investigated misogyny and harassment. They also had a workshop that looked at the importance of driving safely as they’re reaching the age where they can start learning to drive. They finished the day looking at interview skills and how to successfully interview for a position.

“I thought the Safe Driving session was very interesting and engaging. I learnt a lot about insurance and how much we have to pay depending on our age. I also liked the interview skills session as I learnt some of the skills I’ll need in interviews in the future and the questions I might be asked.” Arsalan, 12C

“Super Learning Day was very informative. The driving skills part of the day was useful in giving us information that we’ll need in the future. It was very useful to me as I didn’t know much at all about owning a car or even about driving lessons. The Interview Skills session taught me a lot about how I can best formulate my answers when I apply for jobs, universities or apprenticeships.” – Aaron, 12F

Year 11 focussed on preparing for their English, Mathematics, and Science GCSEs and Year 13 worked closely with a group of teachers and an external University Admissions Tutor to improve their UCAS applications and/or CVs. Good luck to everyone applying this year!

“It was fun and educational to consider and role-play different scenarios that we may be exposed to in interview situations or in the workplace.” – Priyal, 13E

All in all, the day was a huge success and we hope there are many more to come in the future!

  • A Level Geography Field Trip

    Published 04/10/23

In late September, the Geography department took the A-Level Geographers on a field trip to Slapton Sands in beautiful Devon to collect primary data for our NEA's. Here's what we got up to!

    Day 1: Setting the Stage

Our journey began with a scenic bus ride that whisked us away from the hustle and bustle of life in Heston to the serene coastal setting of Slapton Sands, Devon. As soon as we arrived, I was struck by the sheer expanse of the beach and the rugged beauty of the surrounding area.  We arrived at our field studies centre and quickly headed out to explore the complex processes shaping this dynamic coastal environment.  In the evening after dinner, we headed back to the classroom to formulate out NEA titles and decide what type of data we needed to collect the following day.

Day 2: Coastal Dynamics in Action

Our second day was all about getting up close and personal with the processes that shape the coastline. We conducted fieldwork to investigate coastal erosion, sediment transport, and deposition. Armed with measuring tapes, clinometers and ranging poles, we assessed the impact of wave energy and tidal currents on the beach. It was incredible to see how the landscape evolved right before our eyes, and the data we collected will be invaluable for my NEA.  We enjoyed a fish and chip lunch on the beach, which was a welcome rest after a busy morning.  In the afternoon, we focused more on the human aspect of coastal management. We met with local residents who shared their strategies for protecting the coastline. It was eye-opening to see how human intervention, such as groynes and beach nourishment, played a crucial role in safeguarding the area's infrastructure and communities. In the evening, we were back in the labs starting to analyse our data and learning how to present it using GIS software.

Day 3: Local Communities and Management

Our final day started with an early morning wake-up call [6am!] to walk to the beach to watch the sunrise, which was a unique and memorable experience.  After breakfast, it was back to the labs to do statistical tests on our data to test IT and see how reliable our findings were, which would help us when writing our conclusions.

As I reflect on this experience, I can't help but think about how it has enriched my NEA project. The data we collected and the first-hand knowledge we gained will be instrumental in crafting a well-informed and comprehensive assessment. Our trip to Slapton Sands was more than just a field expedition; it was an immersive learning experience that brought our textbooks to life. The beauty of geography lies in its ability to connect theory to the real world, and Slapton Sands did just that for me.

Let's continue to explore the wonders of our planet through the lens of geography!
