More Able Evening

It was delightful to see so many determined students, with a fervent desire to thrive academically attending the More Able Evening. As a keynote speaker, I navigated my Hestonian peers through my GCSE journey:

  • Including: my revision routine
  • My meticulous choices at home and in class
  • Capitalising on seeking support from teachers
  • how to make the most of mock examinations
  • The ways in which my parents supported me
  • Advice for maintaining positive mental health during this time
  • Extra and super-curricular activities I have engaged in [and some that I engage in now]
  • Useful websites for purchasing revision guides
  • Revision techniques and materials.

All of this enabled the metamorphosis from mere dreams in my heart to reality sealed in the final envelope.

I was able to speak at our recent More Able Evening, where I shared my own journey through the GCSE period, discussing the preparation strategies and routines that helped me grow both academically and personally. It was rewarding to talk about how I achieved my grades and I hope everyone left with a better understanding of the resources and techniques that contributed to my success. I also highlighted how the School’s support, through enrichment programs and teacher guidance, motivated me to aim higher and push my boundaries. I think the Evening gave students and parents a clearer idea of the many ways that I, along with past students, were able to succeed and offered some helpful tips.

On 07 November, my parents and I attended the More Able Evening, which was a delightful opportunity. Some Sixth Form students gave a motivational speech to share their advice and personal experience, so I can progress and work to my full potential. They also gave some tips on how I can revise every day, so I can remember what I was taught on that day. Miss Chana advised students to go to more enrichment clubs, which is equally important as it can boost confidence. Also, many new websites were introduced to help me with my learning. Overall, this was a magnificent experience, and I found this extremely beneficial to tackle my weakness, so I can achieve my goals. Romana Fernandes [8R]

I attended Heston's More Able Meeting; an event designed to support and inspire students. The session began with an overview of the school’s enrichment opportunities, such as subject-specific societies, external competitions, sports clubs, all aimed at broadening our academic and personal horizons. This was followed by a deep dive into effective revision strategies for Maths, English, and Science, where teachers shared techniques tailored to each subject. For Maths, we were encouraged to focus on problem-solving and practice exam-style questions regularly, while for English, the emphasis was on reading, exploring multiple interpretations of texts, and planning exam responses. In Science, the importance of understanding core concepts and completing independent questions were stressed.

The most impactful part of the evening came when Sixth Formers and past Heston students shared their experiences. They spoke candidly about the challenges they faced and how they overcame them, offering invaluable insights into their revision routines, from creating detailed study schedules to using helpful websites and flashcards to reinforce their learning. Hearing their stories made the path to academic success feel more tangible and achievable. By the end of the evening, I left feeling not only inspired but also equipped with practical tools and a renewed sense of purpose for my own studies. Anneka Chumber [10B]

The More Able Evening was an outstanding event that showcased presentations from successful former Heston students who are now attending top universities. These accomplished individuals shared the specific study techniques and strategies they employed to achieve A’s and A*'s in their chosen subjects. Their insights and first-hand experience of A Levels provided valuable guidance and inspiration for myself and other students aiming for top grades. Taranveer Johal [12E]
