  • Gymkhana Football Club

    Published 16/11/23

Both Amrit Webra and Rageh Jamaac play for the Gymkhana FC in Osterley. Amrit has been playing for them for three years and Rageh for two. This team is in the Premier League for the Middlesex division.

“For this team, I play left wing and on Thursday 09 November we played a London Cup game where I assisted once and scored once. While playing this game, I feel as though I have shown resilience, as they are a challenging side to play and I didn’t give up even when it was tough. Through playing with this team for three years, I have learnt how to be part of a team and respect others. I really enjoy being part of this team and will continue to play throughout my GCSE studies.” Amrit Webra [10G]

“I play center-mid for this team and in the last game I scored once and assisted Amrit in his goal. I enjoy playing for this team as I have ambitions to play football professionally and as I get older. The game was physical and I had to get stuck in, but I am proud of the 4-3 results . I encourage everyone to join a team sport because you can learn lots of beneficial skills to help you in all areas of life.” Rageh Jamaac [10Y]

  • Careers Fair 2023

    Published 15/11/23

We hosted our annual Careers Fair and invited a wide range of employers, universities, colleges and training providers to join us for this evening. We had several talks that took place during the evening, which were highly attended.  Students and their parents/carers had the opportunity to engage in valuable conversations with the exhibitors and take away resources to help them to continue to explore options. Feedback was very positive and we look forward to holding this again next year.

"Overall, the Careers Fair was good. It was neatly organised and I was able to take a look round the different groups. All the arrangements were on point. It allowed me to speak to my desired organisations quickly and efficiently. The exhibitors were very nice and provided me with lots of information in regard to what I was looking for." Rayhan Kabir [12A]

"The Careers Evening allowed me to get first-hand experience of different university campuses and facilities. The evening was fun and an informative way to narrow down my options, to find the right fit for my future. I explored Coventry University and Royal Holloway University and both were extremely helpful, to help me gather valuable information to help me with my decisions." Faiza Shooble [12H]

"The Careers Fair was the perfect opportunity to meet employers from different career paths. For Year 7-9, it is an excellent experience that incentivises Year 9s to pick specific subjects for GCSE. The Careers Fair also allows students in Key Stage 4, to network and speak to professionals in specific career areas they may want to pursue. Overall, the Careers Fair was the perfect opportunity for young students to develop passions for specific careers and even more beneficial for older year groups, to meet with potential employers." Sara Daci [12G]

"The Careers Fair was very beneficial, as it gave an opportunity to explore our options for our future careers. Employers from a variety of workplaces spoke with students from Years 7-13 and gave supportive, advantageous advice on how we can achieve, to get our desirable grades and the determination to stand out. Given I am someone who is confused about what I would like to study at university, the Careers Fair gave me clear, sufficient insight on interesting degrees. I spoke with professionals, such as employers from British Airways, The Army and Imperial College London." Rianna Ludhra [12G]

"In my exploration of healthcare-oriented professions, I delved into the dynamic landscape of healthcare careers using the EMSI Careers Coach digital tool. This invaluable resource offered me a comprehensive understanding of the diverse healthcare professions available in my region, unveiling the myriad specializations within the field. Expanding my journey, I had the privilege of visiting GSK and engaging with seasoned healthcare professionals. Their firsthand experiences illuminated the spectrum of responsibilities inherent in healthcare roles, emphasizing the pivotal role of teamwork in this sector. This immersive encounter not only enriched my knowledge of healthcare careers but also significantly influenced my perspective on potential career trajectories within the healthcare realm. It underscored the profound potential for making a meaningful impact on the lives of individuals, solidifying my commitment to pursuing a fulfilling career in the healthcare field." Alexandru Apetrei [13B]

  • Y12 Interview Workshop

    Published 14/11/23

On Wednesday, 08 November Year 12 T Level Management and Administration students had the opportunity to take part in an interview workshop, hosted by Spark and volunteers from the local community.  There were 9 volunteers in total from different sectors that attended.  Each volunteer came with their own breadth and depth of experience, which was invaluable in itself.

As a student at Heston Community School, I have always been nervous about interviews and public speaking. However, when a group of volunteers came into our school to help students with our interview skills, I was grateful for the opportunity. The volunteers worked with us on a one-to-one basis, providing tips and guidance on how to better communicate our strengths and experiences during interviews. Thanks to their coaching, I was able to develop more confidence in both myself and my abilities, allowing me to excel in future interview situations. I am grateful for the time and efforts that these volunteers put into helping me and my fellow students.

  • Heston students become published Authors and Poets

    Published 14/11/23

The book launch of ‘Perspectives’ was a celebration of the diverse and powerful voices of female students from different backgrounds and experiences. It was a wonderful experience to see the work of 18 Heston Students published in the book, alongside talented writers from other local Schools. ‘Perspectives’, was not only a showcase of the creative talents of the female students, but a platform for raising awareness and dialogue on the issues that affect them and their communities. ‘Perspectives’ was a testament to the power of writing and art as a form of expression, empowerment, and activism. Thank you to Hounslow Action Youth [HAY] and Ms Kyriacou for arranging this amazing opportunity.

  • Review of Open Evening

    Published 01/11/23

On our annual Open Evening, I was one of the Tour Guides for parents and children of our potential Year 7 students this year. The children were accompanied by their parents to meet our teachers and take a tour of the School.  All the parents I spoke to were left with a lasting, positive impression of Heston, with the children eager to join in and learn more about Heston through the activities in each department. Their interest was particularly sparked in the science experiments conducted in the Science Area, which had amazing displays and activities for all our visitors to experience. The fact that the parents could ask the Tour Guides questions about our school and receive sincere responses from current students, was really useful to the parents.

  • Year 10 Geography Trip

    Published 01/11/23

The Year 10 Geographers had the fantastic opportunity to travel to Hengistbury Head near Bournemouth as part of their GCSE fieldwork investigation.  The trip was spread out over two days with 60 students going on each day.  We arrived at school at 07:00 and were on the coach by 07:30. The coach trip was about two hours long, but when we arrived the long journey was worth it for the amazing views.

The purpose of our trip was to collect data that would help us to answer our key question: To what extent does beach width vary at Hengistbury Head? We went to three different sites and at each site we got into groups of 4/5 and we measured how wide the beach was as well as the rate of longshore drift. To measure the longshore drift, we had to throw oranges into the sea and measure how far they travelled in a sixty-second period.

As we walked from site to site, our teachers pointed out different types of coastal management techniques and also evidence of coastal processes like erosion and slumping.  It was really interesting to see in real life what we have learnt about in the classroom and it really brought the subject to life.

All in all, it was an exhilarating experience and we are so grateful to everyone who helped to plan and organise the trip.

  • European Day of Languages

    Published 01/11/23

“The MFL Department celebrated the European Day of Languages on Tuesday, 26 September 2023. From my French teacher, I learnt that learning another language is so important, so that we can understand millions more people around the world and be able to understand the culture of countries when we visit them. We did some fun activities. The French teachers provided us with the opportunity to taste French food such as croissants and ‘pain au chocolat’ at lunchtime. The croissants were very tasty and I think everyone should try them!” Jasmeet Batra [10W]

“I found the quiz very exciting and really fun, as I had the opportunity to find out the different languages that some of the teachers could speak at Heston Community School.“ Ashneet Arora in [10B]

“I really enjoyed the quiz. There were 10 winners for completing the quiz and I was one of them. I received a box of Celebration chocolates as a prize.!” Jagraj Gill [8P]

  • More Able Evening 2023

    Published 23/10/23

The More Able Evening was the perfect opportunity for the parents of students aiming for Grade 7-9 or As and A*s to improve their awareness of the steps they must take to ensure their children reach their maximum academic potential.

From Year 7 to Year 12, this evening has always been effective in providing an insight into the resources and opportunities that are available to us, so we can really push ourselves into achieving the top grades. I particularly enjoyed the keynote speech from a former student, Jasleen Kapoor. She provided us with a story of the journey into her career - this was enlightening and showed us that even if our performance in school is not perfect, there is always another route we can take to reach our final goal. Mr Ghataura gave a talk on how parents can support the younger students in staying focused on their academics, but also setting achievable and realistic goals. For Key Stage 4 and 5, we had the opportunity to talk to ex-Heston students and received valuable advice on how to revise efficiently and how to balance social and academic life.

Overall, the evening was educational and provided a clear understanding of how parents and their children can work in tandem with each other to achieve the best that they can.

  • New High Magnification Microscopes

    Published 23/10/23

Using the new microscopes was truly an enriching experience, allowing us to view several samples ranging from plant roots, bird feathers and sand granules. We could see up to x1000 magnification.

It was so fascinating viewing these under the microscope, so we can get a sense of their physical structure. We also carried out a Biology A-Level Required Practical, which resulted in great success, as we saw cells undergoing  prophase and metaphase which helped build my understanding of mitosis. The hands-on experience really allowed us to improve our scientific knowledge, preparing us for university should we choose to take sciences. I look forward to using these amazing microscopes in the future!

    Published 23/10/23

It was such a lovely surprise to see the new changing rooms for our PE lessons.

I like the new colours and the modern feel. They are much brighter, cleaner, open and more spacious than before. They are much nicer than our old changing rooms.

  • National Poetry Day – 05 October 2023

    Published 23/10/23

National Poetry Day took place on 05 October and helped us explore relevant topics related to 'refuge' and the diverse beliefs related to this. An amazing example of a beautiful poem that explores these themes is Roger Robinson's 'A Portable Paradise'.

This literature-based event was open to all year groups from Year 7 all the way to Year 13 and even extended to the teachers, which created an inspiring learning environment for us. We participated in creating beautiful short pieces of poetry about what refuge means to us, not only what home is but also how it feels to be safe. Ms Currie read out her favourite poem and Mrs Kyriacou displayed many poems in the LRC.

Honestly, this was a wonderful experience for students and staff to analyse and to raise awareness of countries that are not as fortunate as us to be safe with no looming threats of war or civil conflicts and to explore the wider theme of refuge through diverse poetry.

A Portable Paradise by Roger Robinson

And if I speak of Paradise,
then I’m speaking of my grandmother
who told me to carry it always
    on my person, concealed, so
no one else would know but me.
That way they can’t steal it, she’d say.
And if life puts you under pressure,
trace its ridges in your pocket,
smell its piney scent on your handkerchief,
hum its anthem under your breath.
And if your stresses are sustained and daily,
get yourself to an empty room – be it hotel,
hostel or hovel – find a lamp
and empty your paradise onto a desk:
your white sands, green hills and fresh fish.
Shine the lamp on it like the fresh hope
of morning, and keep staring at it till you sleep.

Year 7 Boys Football v Rivers: Won 4-2

Year 8 Boys Football v Bolder: Lost 6-0

Match Report: Year 7 Boys Football v Rivers Academy.

    Written By Raphael Conner 7B

The second game of the season for the year 7 team saw a visit from Rivers Academy. The match kicked off and 3 minutes in came the first chance for Heston. Roshan laid the ball off to Enva, who passed to Zak on the wing, who calmly placed his shot into the bottom right corner of the goal. 1-0 Heston. Roshan was doing an excellent job controlling the midfield and directing play. Roashan crossed the ball to Raphael who volleyed the ball to score the second goal of the match. Rivers then started to test the Heston defence but defenders and Alex and Cezar stopped a number of shots. It was an unfortunate goal keeping mistake which was pounced on by Rivers for their first goal. Half-time came, Heston remained up 2-1.

The second half started and changes were made by both teams. Both teams tested each other’s goalkeepers with a number of shots early in the second half. Shots continued back and forth from both teams and Rivers was first to score in the second half, bringing the score level 2-2. Rivers continued to dominate play early into the half. Heston made a couple of substitutions which helped to turn the game. Roshan linked up again with Enva, who held the ball up for Raphael who smashed the ball onto the crossbar but then down into the goal. 3-2 Heston! Rivers attacked again looking for an equaliser. Cezar intercepted the ball passing down the line to Zak, who crossed the ball to Enva. Enva who controlled the ball well under pressure, turned and struck the ball into the bottom corner to help secure the win 4-2.

Girls Football and Netball Club Updates

    Written by Paige Williams 11O

Netball with Miss Hunter has been fun and interactive. We do fun skill-based activities that prepare us for our games with demonstrations helping our understanding and knowledge. There has been a fantastic turnout of girls from Year 7 all the way to year 11 involved in playing with the club this year - which is lovely to see. The commitment has been positive with lots of new faces.

Girls' football has had a good start to the year with lots of new girls attending the club. The groups are split; Year 7 is coached by Miss Reynolds and the junior and senior teams coached by Miss Seremba. This gives us time to practice with our teammates before our upcoming fixtures after half-term. I have enjoyed both of these clubs and am excited about the year ahead for girls' clubs.
