  • National Apprenticeship Show

    On Wednesday, 02 March, I along with my fellow classmates were given the opportunity to visit the National Apprenticeship Show. It was an excellent event, we were all able to meet with prospective employers and learn about the different apprenticeship and degree apprenticeship routes that they offered. There were two different sections to this jam packed event; the first was the apprenticeship route and the second was all about higher education.  It was really interesting to be able to do the comparisons between the two Post 18 routes and the students from Year 11 and 12 were able to benefit as well.

    I spoke with an apprentice from Cushman and Wakefield who was really helpful when it came to answering my questions about how to apply and key dates.

  • World Book Day

    World Book Day was on Thursday 3rd March. Heston celebrated this through several fun events taking place throughout the day.

    Firstly, there was the staff costume competition. This was won by Ms Macdonald and Mr Salcedo who dressed up as Lady Macbeth and Sherlock Holmes. Personally, I really liked Miss Dinkha’s Moaning Myrtle from Harry Potter. Inside her room, she had several books laid out on top of red cloth, as well as four massive, remarkable swords from various fantasy novels.

    For the students, a scavenger hunt was organised, with the goal of finding and writing down a teacher with a sticker, corresponding to a classic novel. Once all ten novels had been noted down, it could be handed into the library where they received a sweet treat, alongside an entry to a raffle. To accommodate this, the LRC was opened at break and lunch, and open to all year groups. This passion for reading, extended to lessons too with all teachers sharing their favourite childhood books.

    Overall, this was a spectacular day, and will stand out in my memories, even well after I graduate.

  • Super Learning Day - Design and Technology Workshop

    For Design Technology Super Learning Day we had two tasks to complete by the end of the day. The first one was a 800mm by 800mm marble maze. The maze had to be solved by two students tilting the board to move the marble inside the maze. We worked in three teams of four. We started to plan out the design of our maze to scale on grid paper, and brought the best parts of the four designs onto our Final Design of the maze. After that we had to make an actual model of it. We had one person plotting the walls, one person gluing the walls to the base with glue gun and two cutting the soft wood to the right size.

    The second activity planned in Design Technology Super Learning Day was even more fun, but really difficult. We designed a Marble Run Challenge.  I was really proud of my teams work.

  • Super Learning Day - London Trail

    For Super Learning Day, Years 7, 8 and 9 students went on a cultural treasure hunt around London. First, we walked to Osterley Tube Station and took the train to Piccadilly Circus. When we got off the train, we were in Central London!

    It was amazing to see all the grand buildings and sites! We walked across Green Park, which was landscaped in 1820 by John Nash, a famous British architect. Buckingham Palace looked majestical and I enjoyed seeing the Beefeaters marching up and down, playing trumpets and drums. The Houses of Parliament and Downing Street were particularly fascinating.

    I would definitely love to do this trip again; I saw London in a way I have never before. Thank you for Miss Ryan and all the teachers for organising it!

  • Super Learning Day - 3D Robots

    It was an incredibly fun day; full of art and meeting new people. We had to be highly creative or else the robot would be ugly. My team had a robot which kept on falling over, so we had to try and find a solution to balance the weight. We were not successful but at least we tried. It was really inspiring to see my other peers' robots as it motivated me to make mine better.

  • Jack Petchey Reward Trip for Centre of the Deaf

    Ishmael Damree in Year 11 won the Jack Petchey Prize for his resilience, hard work and positive attitude to learning. He shared his prize money with The Centre for the Deaf. The students were taken to Kingston Cinema to watch a subtitled showing of Spider-Man; No Way Home. The students were provided with refreshments while watching the film. After the movie, students were taken to Pizza Express where they were treated to pizza and dough balls. They thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience.

  • Super Learning Day - 'Just as you are' workshops

    The ‘JAYA’ lessons which we did for Super Learning day were really interesting and interactive. This means "You are amazing..... Just As You Are..... and don't you forget it!"

    We learnt about domestic violence, consent, friendships, healthy relationships, laws of consent, which linked directly into our PSHE lessons. This was really beneficial because it increased our understanding of the topics. We completed a lot of activities throughout the course of the day and discussed our opinions with each other.

  • Centre of the Deaf Trip to The Globe Theatre

    The Centre for the Deaf organised a trip to The Shakespeare's Globe to watch a signed and captioned performance of Macbeth.

    This was an amazing opportunity not only for the students who are studying this play for GCSE English, but for younger students who will now have a better understanding of the play for the future. A member of the Globe Theatre ran a pre-performance workshop at the school which incorporated team work, role plays and language.

    On the day, we were taken on a tour of the theatre, met with some of the actors and had the opportunity to go up on stage.

  • 'Let Girls Play!'

    On Wednesday 9th of March, the Year 9 girls Football Team went to a tournament being held for National Women’s Day and the 'Let Girls Play' campaign at Bolder Academy. The FA, supported by Barclays, set up 'Let Girls Play' because they want all girls to have equal access to football in schools by 2024. They believe that girls should have the same opportunities that boys currently have to play. Therefore, a tournament was held to support this, and allowed us to celebrate our participation in the sport.

    During this experience, female football coaches from Brentford FC did a special training session with Heston and Bolder students together, allowing us to develop our skills, but also train and bond with other students from another school. The Year 9 girls had so much fun meeting the Bolder Academy students from Year 7, 8 and 9, showing kindness and respect towards one another. Overall, it was a great experience, and a lot of fun was had by all. We look forward to the opportunity to do this again next year.

  • Year 9 Boys Football

    Last week, our Year 9 A team faced Springwest Academy and came out on top, winning 7-3. We analysed their strategy and were able to capitalise on it, using our Thinking ME skills developed in our PE lessons. We all showed hard work, perseverance and teamwork which led to our victory. At the same time, our B team also faced Springwest Academy, losing 10-3. No matter the score line, they kept their heads up and gave it their all. They were resilient and were an excellent representation of the Hestonian values.

    On Tuesday, the A team faced Rivers Academy. In the first half we didn't play as well as we could have and it showed with the score line being 4-1 to the visitors. We were determined and didn't give up and that helped us get 3 goals back finishing the game in a 4-4 draw. A brilliant, hard-fought game. This was a performance everyone from Heston should be proud of.

  • NASA: Women in Physics Workshop

    I have always been interested in Physics, but I did not have a good understanding of the Physics based jobs I could do in the real world. This NASA workshop gave me an insight into how Physics is constantly being used to further modernize industries and develop our knowledge of space as we send engineer designed, rockets and robots.

    Doing a range of exciting, analytical experiments and studying the trajectory of our hand-crafted paper rocks, has given me a wider perspective on Physics and made me eager to find out more about jobs in this field.

  • Virtual Parents' Evenings

    Since the beginning of January 2022, Heston Community School has moved all its parents’ evenings to a new digital format.

    Feedback has been extremely positive with teachers commenting

    • It was really easy to use and meetings ran well … plenty of time to speak to the parents and get all the information across.
    • Fantastic! Really seamless. No problems.
    • The software worked really well. 

    Parents were also pleased at how easy and intuitive the software is to use. In addition, we have been delighted to see that the software supports an increase in the number of families where both sets of parents are now able to attend.
