  • Spring Concert at Heston!

    Published 27/03/23

Heston Community School celebrated and showcased the strengths of our wonderful musicians in a Spring Concert on Tuesday, 21 March.

The vocalists and instrumentalists have dedicated enormous time and energy to preparing this show and it looked set to uplift the audience!

Matilda [9P] said, “It is fun meeting new people as part of the choir. We are like a community inside the wider school community.”

Toby [9Y] added, ”There is real variety in this concert. We have all been working on the visual aspects of our performance and the choir made quite a different entrance at the start of the show. We also had a song sung in Tagalog by a student with Filipino heritage, which was exciting.”

Harman [9W] said, “We were trying to surprise the audience. We wanted the songs to be fun and high energy.”

The audience were treated to a real range of genres at the concert, from the up-tempo pop of Rick Astley to the rebellious rock of Pink Floyd and the sublime blues-jazz of Nina Simone.

There were solo performances, two school bands, individual instrumentalists and of course the choir!

This amazing event has taken tremendous amounts of dedication, confidence and team-work from the students, our Head of Music, Mr Loseto and our Graduate Music Assistant, Mr Andriulo.

  • Lord Haskel's Visit

    Published 27/03/23

Meeting with Lord Haskel, was an informative, interesting experience, which introduced me to a glimpse of a life as a Lord, and what impact the House of Lords really has on our society. Whilst engaged in a presentation by Lord Haskel, we learnt about who the Lords are, what they do and the difference and similarities between the House of Lords and the House of Commons. We were educated on the history of the House of Lords, and how the current House of Lords impacts our society. I found it constructive, and intriguing how influential and significant the Lords are on the public and the Government. Lastly, Lord Haskel helpfully gave feedback on all our questions, from all topics, in detail, as well as delivering advice on how to pursue a role as a Lord. After this eye-opening experience, I agree with Lord Haskel that politics should have a more important aspect in young people’s education, and that we should encourage young people to seek involvement in politics.

    Prem Ghatora [9R]

My experience with Lord Haskel's visit taught me a lot about politics. There was a lot more to it than I had expected. Lord Haskel was very descriptive with any questions that we asked and answered them thoroughly. He made a very valid point during the visit; he had mentioned children in politics. He had said that since a lot of politics are based around education, more children should be interested in this field, as they can speak for their fellow students.

Overall, it was a delightful experience, and I am glad to have had the chance to be a part of it.

  • ‘An Inspector Calls’ at Heston

    Published 24/03/23

On Tuesday, 21 March, as part of Super Learning Day revision activities for English, Year 11 watched a performance of ‘An Inspector Calls’ by Drama Impact. This was followed by a workshop with the actors, in which students bravely took on key roles and performed part of the play.

The ‘An Inspector Calls’ production was an interactive and immersive experience. I really enjoyed seeing the story play out before me, and watching members of the year group have fun whilst acting out the play. The actors provided an entertaining yet educational production and as a result, our understanding of the play was enriched.

  • CSI Heston

    Published 23/03/23

I am thrilled to report that, as Year 13 BTEC Level 3 Applied Science students, we recently had the chance to examine a fictitious murder scene. We were able to test our scientific knowledge in an exciting and instructive encounter. We all had a terrific time cooperating to solve the crime, from gathering evidence to having our individual CSI roles.

First, we wore our PPE which included wearing a coverall, then we cordoned off the crime scene and then took photographs and measurements. After this process, we gathered evidence with minimal cross-contamination to improve the integrity of the evidence so that the evidence can help highlight what happened during the crime. This evidence would also be strong in Court when trying to support an argument.

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves while studying the scene, and we learned vital skills that will help us in our future employment. All in all, it was a wonderful event that we will all cherish for a long time.

  • Macbeth comes to Heston

    Published 20/03/23

On Friday 10th March, Year 11 students watched a performance of ‘Macbeth’ by Questors Theatre.

“The performance was incredible, we were able to see the story of ‘Macbeth’ in full and learn whilst being immersed in an amazing performance. The actors used shadows to portray certain scenes, like the hallucination of Banquo’s ghost, causing all of the audience to be mesmerised.”  Reia, 11Y

“The ‘Macbeth’ production evoked a myriad of emotions. It was not only entertaining but also very educational and helped give a great visual representation of ‘Macbeth’ using the real text – which made me feel like I was a Jacobean watching it at the time! In terms of entertainment, the bright lights, props and backdrop was very aesthetically appealing, setting the scene for each act.”  Sehraj, 11B

“I really enjoyed the production! The actors worked so well and we could definitely see their hard work through the personas, props and atmosphere. It was a fun experience to know the lines just as the actors were reciting them.”  Iram, 11B

  • T Level Workplace Workshop

    Published 16/03/23

Both Business and Science T Level students took part in workplace workshop on the 08 March.  The workshop was run by Spark!, a local charity that helps schools to engage with industry, and shows that students can get an understanding of the different career paths out there in industry.  The workshop was an interactive session, that was both fun and informative.  We were put into groups and had to discuss what we think is professional and unprofessional within the workplace. The discussion was based on examples, which gave us a practical insight into how we should behave when we carry out our industry placements.   We also carried out some interview practice, focusing in particular on the STAR technique. I fully recommend T Levels to future sixth-formers; it prepares you for the workplace by developing our soft skills as well as giving you a good academic grounding.

  • Somerville College Roadshow

    Published 16/03/23

On Monday, 13 March we had two students who are currently studying at Somerville College, University of Oxford, talk to some students from Year 9-12. They gave an insight into studying at the University, as well as information on admissions. Students had the opportunity to learn more about how best to prepare for university and how to access further support in the future.

    Feedback

"Having aspirations of attending the University of Oxford, the Somerville Access Roadshow immediately piqued my interest. Going in, I hadn't heard of Somerville, but the speakers gave a brief overview of their college's history, the other colleges, and the entire university, which was very engaging. What I valued most from the talk was their experiences with the admissions process. Hearing how they [the speakers] had prepared for their interviews and written their statements made the process feel less frightening and more of a possibility. Overall, it was a fascinating insight into life at the University of Oxford that will be invaluable to all potential applicants."

    Moaiad Adam [12H]

The Somerville College Roadshow was a fantastic opportunity for us to understand the Oxford University experience; we learnt about admissions, the variety of colleges and aspects of university life. We were given information about the Oxford application and interview process, and how it may differ from other universities and colleges. It was so interesting to receive first-hand experiences from Oxford students, who also offered advice about UCAS applications for Year 12’s, and even revision strategies and the importance of being passionate about subjects for younger years. Overall, it was an invaluable experience and I gained lots of knowledge from it!

  • Hounslow Youth Parliament

    Published 16/03/23

Voting for candidates vying in the election for this year’s Hounslow Youth Parliament helped us gain an insight into democracy and its role in modern Britain. This taught us the importance of engaging with the candidates to understand how they would represent our interests in this borough and their key priorities. Young people can and should make a difference in the community and encourages others to do so too. Watching the candidates talk about their manifestos was interesting, given that youth voices can be crucial expressions of the community needs. On the day of voting, we had to tick the boxes of two candidates who we thought were most persuading. All the candidates were definitely positive and propitious; it will be exciting to find out who will win and what they will do to contribute to the development of Hounslow and represent the interests of young people in this borough to improve our community.

  • Peter Radford: Exam Winner Workshop

    Published 15/03/23

On Friday, 03 March 2023, we invited Peter Radford [Beyond This] to speak to Year 11 students, and selected Year 13 students. Peter is an inspirational public speaker who we have had the pleasure of having in Heston on many occasions to speak to both staff and students. The focus of the Exam Winner Workshop was to motivate students and their growth mindset, work on memory techniques and revision strategies and how students can cope with stress.

The workshop really helped me because I have realised how many revision techniques there are and how I can effectively use them. I really enjoyed that it was interactive as well because it got everyone involved and engaged.

    Kiran Gill [11R]

The workshop provided valuable insights into the essential elements of an effective revision session while also highlighting typical mistakes students make when revising. Furthermore, the presenter shared helpful tips on what to do and what to avoid, maximizing our revision productivity. This information proved to be beneficial, as it equipped us with the necessary tools to prepare for forthcoming exams such as GCSEs and A Levels.

The speaker presented clear examples of the differences between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset and explained in detail how each one can impact academic achievement. This encouraged us to reflect on our own mindset and assess whether we have a fixed or growth mindset. This is essential in determining the effectiveness of our revision strategies.

  • Student Council Reps Leading The Way!

    Published 10/03/23

Every Autumn term, Heston Student Council invites students of all years to join its existing Student Reps in trying to make positive changes to our school community.

Students apply to be reps via an application form, and are then invited to formal interviews where they talk about their own visions for school improvement. The application form checking and interviewing is done by our reps, with some assistance from Senior Students.

The role of a Student Council Rep empowers students who want to make a real change! Reps meet with Senior leaders, conduct surveys to feedback student views, and they also oversee a fortnightly round of nominations called Hestonian Heroes where each year 7-11 tutor group nominates a student whom they feel embodies one of our Hestonian Values: Kindness, Respect, Honesty, Ambition, Resilience, and Equality.

Over 200 Heston students have now been recognised for their Hestonian values – a certificate is emailed to each, parents are notified by letter, and the nominated names all get put into a prize draw for a gift voucher at the end of the academic year.

It is really important to recognise the positive attitudes that our students show,” says Virleen in Year 11.”The Hestonian Values are not just words on a noticeboard.”

Pavleen in Year 11 says that being part of Heston Student Council has helped her to “develop communication skills, I have shared my ideas and helped to make my school a better place. I have also developed time management, I have learned to balance my rep role with GCSE revision. My confidence has really improved.”

Bob, in Year 10, says ”I have developed a variety of transferable skills such as communicating with teachers and pupils, working on team projects, and training younger reps to do School Council admin duties.”

Thanks to all our Student Council Reps for the time and energy they give to our school community.

  • Year 10 ‘Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge’ Regional Final

    Published 09/03/23

At our school final in February 2023, Angelina Tihhomirova [10O] was selected as Heston’s representative in the regional final of the ‘Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge’, a public speaking competition in which entrants must speak without notes for between 1.5 and 3 minutes on a topic of their choice.

Our judges, Ms Hart and Ms Currie, also highly commended Subhan Sohail [10P] and Thameera Ladva [10W], as well as recognising the courage, passion and preparation of all of our finalists.

At the regional final at Brentford School for Girls on Tuesday, 28 February, Angelina powerfully delivered her speech about the limitations of our current education, with real flair and confidence.

Whilst the competition was very strong, Angelina exemplified our values of ambition and resilience, and we are so proud of her.

Angelina says: “During this event, I was very excited to hear other people's speeches and to express my own. I think that the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge has helped me to become more confident talking in front of big groups of people. I would definitely recommend other students to take advantage of this opportunity as you can greatly improve your communication skills and boost your confidence!”
