It is important that students should learn about the history of all peoples especially appropriate in a school such as Heston. The Black History Art Competition held during Black History Month helped us all to learn more about black history and to recognise the contributions they have made to the United Kingdom. 

I chose Nichelle Nicholes as my person of choice as I had heard of her name but never really investigated her history and achievements. Nichelle was one of the first black woman to be part of the main cast in a TV show in the 80s and 90s. The TV show she played a role in was called Star Trek. This was a groundbreaking achievement for a woman of colour at that time. 

This inspired me to put planets, stars and aliens in the background, to really promote the role she played in Star Trek which was Communications Officer on the deck of the spaceship. I used my artistic skills learnt in lessons along with the pencils to create a shaded look on her shirt, face and hair and markers in the background. 

I enjoyed creating this piece and learning more about an influential black woman.

I really enjoyed the story-telling workshop because we got told stories that were about fantasy adventure and war. I loved how Jordan changed his voice as he said each bit and as the dilemma was rising, he added suspense to make us visualise and think deeper. We drew maps of the setting for our story, and we made our own summary of the story in just 8 bullet-points, which was a challenge but also fun! I enjoyed the morning a lot, and I can't wait for next time. I want to be able to tell stories like that too!

Jordan Campbell is a Professional Storyteller and Outreach Officer from the University of West London. Storytelling workshops build student confidence and develop their literacy and oracy skills in a creative and engaging way. 

Super Learning Day Year 13- Post 18 Transition Support 

Super Learning Day provided a brilliant opportunity for all Year 13 students to get support with their personal statements for UCAS as well as applying for apprenticeships.  The day also provided an opportunity to talk with teachers about our plans for September 2023.  I was with Mr Rawling an external consultant who really helped me to refine my personal statement. In this session, Peter suggested how I could incorporate my super curricular activities to demonstrate why I wanted to study this course, and I felt more confident about writing my personal statement afterward. Peter provided me with clear and constructive feedback that helped me tweak my final draft, and he also provided me with additional resources to aid with the interview process.

SLD Planning for Life After A Levels 

During the Super Learning Day, we learnt about a number of crucial skills that will help us succeed as we look to the future. For example, initially we began with a talk introducing and guiding us on how to write an effective CV which involved what to include as well as different ways to make your CV stand allowed us to interact with each other to help us prepare for interviews. Overall, I thought it was an extremely helpful experience.
