Word of the Week - Sonorous

In our efforts to continue to develop students’ literacy we launched a ‘Word of the Week’ programme last year and it is continuing this year.

The ‘Word of the Week’ will be displayed in classrooms and around the school and will be used throughout lessons in order to ensure students are developing their vocabulary. Literacy achievement points can now be awarded to students for the correct usage of these words in all lessons.

The ‘Word of the Week’ for the week commencing 21 November is: Sonorous

 Word of the Week - SonorousSonorous:

1.  A loud, imposing, deep and full sound.

Mr. O’Keeffe’s sonorous reading voice engages his Year 8 class.

2.  Capable of producing a loud or ringing sound.

 The sonorous nature of the fire alarm makes sure that the building is quickly evacuated.

Synonyms: Booming, Powerful, Resounding.

Antonyms: Calm, Soothing, Hushed.
