Science The Science Department likes to Ensure that students are scientifically literate and can understand contemporary issues is the principle aim of the Science department at Heston Community School. Pupils are encouraged to see Science as relevant, interesting and important to their lives. We offer a broad curriculum which builds upon what students have learnt at junior school. We aim to provide engaging and stimulating lessons and students enjoy and are successful in Science. Practical work forms an important part of the course, students are encouraged to investigate scientific ideas they are studying and develop their skills in planning and communicating their findings. At GCSE the department offers a variety of routes, allowing all students to leave the school with two Science GCSEs. In addition to this we also offer separate sciences, which is excellent preparation for students who wish to study Science later on in life. The courses which we offer emphasise the development of skills as well as learning the course content. The students learn to critically evaluate science reported in the news and consider the impact that scientific advances have on their everyday lives. Science is a popular subject in the sixth form. Many students progress to study Science at top Universities or pursue Science related careers. As students often achieve the highest grades, they regularly go on to university to study a wide variety of subjects from chemical engineering to medicine and optics. Science students regularly gain places at Oxford and Cambridge, and the best University of London Colleges and Medical Schools.
