Key Stage 3
French is taught to mixed ability groups in Year 7. Students in Years 8 and 9 are taught in sets, with the top sets studying two languages, either Spanish or German in addition to French.
In addition to a varied and engaging curriculum designed to support students in their acquisition of vocabulary and grammar, all Year 9 students take part in our annual Language Fayre where they undertake project work in groups about aspects of culture and society in France and other French speaking countries.

Useful Websites
Some of these websites require a password which you can get from your teacher.
How to support your child
Support from parents/carers can make a big difference to a child's confidence when learning a foreign language. The following are some activities that you can do to help improve your child's MFL learning experience:
- Encourage your child to use the websites given to them by their teacher to practice their language skills.
- Purchase a small bilingual dictionary in the language your child is learning to help them with their homework. These are sold in most book shops and stationers and are relatively inexpensive.
- Help your child to learn vocabulary by testing them to help reinforce what they have learnt in school.
- Suggest that your child teaches you or younger siblings phrases and items of vocabulary, this helps reinforce your child's understanding and gives them a strong sense of achievement.
- If you are considering going abroad on holidays, why not visit the country whose language your child is learning and encourage them to use some of the words they have learnt?
Encourage your child to make the most of their modern foreign language from the time they start learning it, and provide them with plenty of positive opportunities to use the language. Make it as interesting and enjoyable an experience as possible and you will see your child's linguistic skills gradually improving over time.
Beyond the curriculum
The languages department have organised visits to France, Spain and Germany in the past as well as local visits to a French restaurant to reward students who have progressed well in their study of MFL.
Your teacher will keep you informed when opportunities arise.
