Key Stage 3
Taught in their mixed ability tutor groups, all students are involved in a variety of classroom activities which include reading, writing, speaking and listening. They are introduced to a wide range of literature and are encouraged to respond both orally and in writing. Students are taught how to draft their work and organise a folder of their best writing. They are set writing or reading homework every week. Students are given the opportunity to express themselves and are encouraged to participate in discussions. Emphasis is placed on reading, both for study and pleasure.
Key Stage 4
All students study both English and English Literature to GCSE level. They are entered for the AQA examinations at the end of Year 11. Students are taught in carefully selected mixed-ability groups. They are stimulated by a wide variety of reading, writing, speaking and listening activities that take place during the lessons. In addition to studying the set texts and being given regular homework, students are encouraged to read widely in their own time.
Post-16
A Level
We accept students who have done well at GCSE to study AS Level in Year 12, with the possibility of continuing at A2 Level in Year 13. We currently offer two EDEXCEL English syllabuses: English Literature, which involves studying a wide variety of drama, prose and poetry and English Language and Literature, which also requires the detailed study of language. Students are taught in small groups and lessons are largely devoted to reading, analysis and lively discussion.
GCSE
For those who wish to improve their GCSE English grade, we offer the AQA Post 16 syllabus which enables students to be entered for the examination at the end of Year 12.
